I know many people have questioned when To Appomattox, the Civil War mini-series that Richard has a part in, will air. An update on the project has been posted on the series’s official Facebook page:

Time for a status report from the front lines… When we last left off, we’d put the Kickstarter on hold due to strong outside interest. NBC brought in a new Sr. VP, Quinn Taylor from ABC, to head their mini-series department. One of the first projects he came after was ours. He flipped for it–really head over heels.

Rob Lowe and I met with him and we were very impressed; he saw it exactly as we see it and said he would bring it in as his first project. Afterward Rob and I agreed that we’d never been in a meeting of this nature where the executive was so passionate for the material. Quinn brought it to the network Chairman a number of times. As of last week, Chairman Bob Greenblatt (with whom I had a very good working relationship with when he ran Showtime and I wrote a pilot for him) made the decision that TO APPOMATTOX was not a miniseries he felt would find an audience on his network.

Netflix was our other suitor. They asked us for the project at the very beginning of August… They have never responded and must be considered a pass.

The most interesting approach, however, was by Mark Burnett (reality producer extraordinaire and the force behind THE BIBLE miniseries). Mark also is very passionate for the scripts. In fact, he said that wanted to have a discussion for his financing/making the series independently. To that end he requested budgets and schedules… This was in mid-August. A conference call was set…and cancelled/rescheduled for mid-September. Unable to make that call he rescheduled it for the second week of October. Unable to make that call we are told he will be available again to discuss at the end of this month.

Mr. Burnett is a tremendous producer with a Midas touch. His desire to pursue this project is sincere. He is also the biggest and busiest producer in television. What he’s wanted to discuss is taking the 8 hour 32 million dollar production and reducing budget while increasing value. To that end, I’ve reworked the series into 10 hour at 25 million. Less per hour cost, higher licensing fee and greater broadcast value do to two more episodes.

Unfortunately, for the past two weeks it has been impossible to get a new date for another attempt at the call. I have met with my team a number of times and discussed with the stars and other talent. Mr. Burnett’s sincerity and desire to do this is real; it is the majority opinion, however, that he does not have the time right now to focus on mounting a TO APPOMATTOX production. (After all, he just sold a new reality series with Virgin’s Sir Richard Branson that will take place in outer space.) So, yes, I believe there is a play with Mark Burnett…It’s just our growing belief that it is a long time off.

It is my desire to make this project ASAP. I believe we will be best served at this point by returning to the Kickstarter Campaign and financing a 2hr MOW (Movie Of the Week). This will be shopped as a backdoor pilot (explained before this is where a 2hr MOW–if it performs well–is picked up to series). If the backdoor pilot concept does not sell to network, it will be shopped/released as an independent film.

You are the best fans. This project has made it due to your unwavering support of all my efforts; your excitement and enthusiasm with each new opportunity that came my way…and your support and steadfast encouragement during those tough times when deals fell through and offers didn’t deliver. Let me know your thoughts on what you’d like to me to do… Very best regards, Michael Frost Beckner

I will post more as updates are provided!
